Frequently Asked Questions
Sugaring is an alternative to waxing. A natural form of hair removal using a paste, resembling candy or caramel, made from water, sugar and lemon juice. The paste is applied onto the skin against the direction of the hair growth, then flicked off - removing the hair. It is not hot, and hurts far less than traditional waxing.
The paste does not stick to skin, only hair.
We do not use any sticks or strips to apply or remove sugar paste. We only use the authentic gloved hand method.
Sugar paste is applied to the skin, against the growth of hair.
Sugar paste is then flicked off the skin, sliding the hair out in the direction of growth.
Sugaring | Waxing |
Made of 3 edible ingredients Sugar, Water & Lemon | Made of resins, rosins, dyes, fragrances and other “proprietary” mystery substances |
Dissolves with just water | Requires solvents, oils and other harsh cleaners. |
Always at body temperature, never hot. Cannot cause burns or sensitivity. | Often needs to be hot to be applied, and then allowed to cool to body temperature to remove. |
Safe for all pigments of skin. Will not cause hyperpigmentation. | Not recommended for those prone to hyperpigmentation. |
No chance of cross contamination. Sugar paste is naturally antibacterial. | Double dipping can happen, causing cross contamination. Bacteria can breed in wax. |
Does not stick to or damage healthy skin. | More likely to cause trauma to the skin. |
Slides hair out in the direction of growth. Reduces breakage and ingrown hairs. | Pull hair backwards, causing follicular distortion, broken hairs and possible ingrown hairs. |
Needs less growth to remove. Recommended 7-10 days of growth. | Requires at least 1/4th of an inch of growth or more to remove. |
Creates a weak hydrogen bond between the hair and sugar paste | shrink wraps to hair and skin |
To answer this, you should first know there are 4 phases of hair growth.
Anagen: Growing
Catagen: Regression
Telogen: Resting
Exogen: Shedding
When hair is sugared in the growing phase (typically when its length is 1/8” to ¼” long), it won’t begin to grow back for 3-6 weeks. However, not all of your hairs are in the same phase at any time. We recommend that clients get sugared every 3 weeks for the first 6 months in order to catch every new growth cycle. This leads to long term hair reduction.
Sugaring doesn't require the hair to be a long as traditional waxing.
Typically 2 weeks from your last shave should be plenty.
Spacing your sugaring appointments 3 weeks apart is recommended.
However, do not trim your hair if it is grown out, you don't want to run the risk of trimming too short. Long hair does not hurt more to get sugared, but strongly rooted hair does hurt more. It isn't the length, it is the strength.
No, sugaring is gently exfoliating and helps to extract ingrown hairs. It removes the hairs from the root in the direction of growth, helping to prevent ingrown hairs from forming.
What does cause ingrown hairs?
In traditional waxing, hair is removed in the opposite direction of growth, causing both disruption in the follicle and broken hairs. This can cause ingrown hairs to form almost immediately.
Naturally, when new hairs are growing in, if the surface of the skin isn't regularly exfoliated and moisturized, the hair can get trapped under a layer of dry, dead skin cells.
